PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
MARTIN J. HANNINEN,
Chief Metallurgist, Pelletizing Systems

Process Airflow Surveys and Process Efficiency Studies

  • Conducted complete and partial pellet plant process airflow surveys and system efficiency studies on all of Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc. managed mines including: the Empire Mine, Hibbing Taconite Mine, Northshore Mine, LTVSMC Mine, Tilden Mine and Wabush Mine. Process airflow survey results are summarized below.
    • Complete system mass and heat balances
    • Complete system pressure/temperature profiles
    • Role of system ingress and egress air leakage
    • Process fan efficiency optimization
    • Burner optimization
    • Heat recovery
    • Furnace air balancing
  • Conducted airflow surveys on all of the vacuum pumps operating at Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc. managed Empire and Tilden Mines.
  • Conducted complete airflow surveys and power generating efficiency studies on Wisconsin Power’s Presque Generating Plant Units 7, 8 and 9.

Process Fan Optimization

  • Designed and sized proper process fan wheel extensions (tips) on the Empire Units 1-4 pelletizing process fans that resulting in using all of the available motor horsepower and increased pellet production on all four pelletizing units.
  • Designed and sized proper process fan wheel diameter reductions that saved operating horsepower on a number of the Tilden Units 1 and 2 pelletizing process fans.
  • Results of process airflow surveys led to the installation of variable frequency drives on a number of the Wabush Mine Pointe Noire Pellet Plant process fans that resulted in electrical energy savings.
  • Results of process airflow surveys led to the design and purchase of smaller diameter wheels on a number of the Northshore pelletizing process fans that resulted in electrical energy savings.
  • Results of airflow surveys resulted in the installation of variable frequency drives on the Presque Isle Power Generating Plant Units 7-9 forced air fans that resulted in electrical energy savings and reduced noise reporting to the community surrounding the plant.

Heat Recovery and Burner Optimization

  • Participated in the design of the first ever grate-kiln-cooler direct second stage cooler heat recuperation systems at the Empire and Tilden Mines.

  • Participated in the design of the low stoichiometric air burners installed on the Empire and Tilden kilns, and the Hibbing Taconite Company straight grate firing chambers.
  • Balanced the airflow to the Northshore pelletizing furnaces 6, 11 and 12, which resulted in energy savings and improved pellet quality.
  • Participated in the design and installation of the low stoichiometric coal pulverizer and burner installed on Empire Unit 2.

Dust Collection

  • Designed many of the wet scrubber and dry bag house dust collection systems presently operating at the Empire and Tilden Mines.
  • Helped design all of electrostatic precipitator installations at the Empire, Tilden and Wabush Mines.
  • Trouble shot numerous dust collection systems operating at all of Cliffs managed mines.
  • Presented numerous dust collection system maintenance and trouble shooting courses for both Empire and Tilden operating and maintenance personnel.
  • Assisted in the design of the of spent oil shale dust collector system that was installed and operated at the Union Oil of California Parachute Creek Oil Shale Plant in Colorado in the mid 1980’s.

Environmental

  • Involved in all air permitting issues at the Empire and Tilden Mines from the mid 1970’s to present.
  • Participated in the USEPA MACT (Reduction of Hazardous Air Pollutants) studies at both the Empire and Tilden Mines.
  • Designed NOx reduction methods required by the USEPA that will in incorporated at both the Empire and Tilden Mines.
  • Coordinated all emission testing conducted at both the Empire and Tilden Mines.
  • Presently manager of a mercury mass balance program that will be conducted at Hibbing Taconite Company in the spring of 2004.

General

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (Michigan Technological University, 1971).
  • Member of SME.
  • Coauthored many technical papers on pellet plant optimization and alternative fuels.
